The boiled fish paste and honey filled pancakes we had the other day were polar opposites. One savory, one sweet, not comparable. The same goes for today’s pairing.

Hot, chewy, slightly strange. Not going for seconds.

Whelk-on-a-stick, or apparently more commonly referred to as top shell, is a roasted sea snail basted on one side with chili sauce, smeared on the other with some mystery substance, then rolled in bonito flakes before being handed over. Behold $2.50 and 6 inches of chewy, pungent delight! I’m still deciding whether it falls in the “mmmm” category, or remains listed under “interesting.” I’m also still picking rubbery snail shards from between my teeth.

Seconds please! And by seconds I mean 10 more.

The tiny bean-filled disk of glory is fried custard bread, though I would rather call it “tiny bean-filled disk of glory.” A crispy fried crust yields to a doughy mantle embracing a sweet bean core. A bag of 10 for $1.75, and you are good to go.
