We spent the morning wandering the grounds of Bongeun-sa, a 1200 year old temple situated in Gangnam. It is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and considered one of Korea’s national treasures.

We happen to be visiting within a couple of weeks of Buddha’s birthday, and there were thousands of celebratory lanterns hanging overhead. We paused to listen to the cyclical chanting of monks and nuns wafting out from behind tall screened doors. The devoted were doing prostrations in front of The Great Statue of Maitreya – the tallest stone statue in Korea.

The incense, chanting, lanterns and luscious grounds in full bloom moved even our irreligious crew.
Our visit to the temple ended with us lighting candles for Hunto, Stevaki, Janet, and Jason.
