Enroute to soak in our first hot spring we came upon the evocative, atmospheric and thoroughly creepy gothic Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Vitórias. It was a cold rainy moment on the edge of Lagoa das Furnas (Furnas Lake), and stoked our morbid fascination.
Built by an eccentric gardener to hold his wife’s remains (and later his as well), it’s not open to the public, but has earned an entry in Atlas Obscura.
