We arrive in Ponta Delgada on Sao Miguel Island, Azores, the first week in March. Its 5:00 a.m. after a four and a half hour red eye flight from Boston.

Our home for the week: Casa das Palmeiras, Charming House. Charming house is a chain of sorts, though in many different buildings. This one once housed a Baroness from Cuba. Rooms were amazing, staff fantastic.

A ten minute, €10 taxi ride deposits us at our guest house well before anything is open. Its a cool mid 50s, damp and alternately threatens rain and sun. Azoreans have a saying “four seasons in one day,” meaning exactly that: in one day it can feel warm and sunny, then cloudy damp and chilly, followed by rain, then whatever else the heavens have in store. Always pack a raincoat. And a sun hat.

Across the street from our abode on the road.
Around the corner from Charming House.

We strolled the quiet streets till we find coffee- cappuccino of course.

Like so many places where life is savored and not hurried, there is no coffee to go. You sit or stand, your day briefly paused while the strong black stuff refires your synapses.

Fancy sardines, the only thing sold in this store.

Harbor views.
