1984. Yasawa Islands, Fiji.

The only light source is the open roof some 60 feet above, the same source of the freshwater filling the cave. Only yards away is the salty warmth of the Pacific ocean. But in here the water is COLD.

The main cave is easily accessible. But the inner chamber is more challenging. Not recommended for the claustrophobic, or those afraid of drowning in cold dark water. In other words, great for the foolish and the young!

I thread my head through the tiniest of spaces, treading water neck deep in the cold. My older brother dives under the rock outcropping, with the goal of making it to clear air on the otherside.

In the twilight of the inner chamber we entered a fantasy world of limestone, illuminated by the glow of the water lit from the outer cave. Swimming, climbing and diving in the dark, these are moments of otherworldly adventure.
