Changdeokgung –Palace of Illustrious Virtue–is only about 5 blocks west of Gyeonbokgung palace. Its also across the street from where we are staying, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It was the second palace of the Joseon Dynasty, built in 1405 just in case Gyeonbokgung was out of commission. Burnt down by the Japanese during their first invasion (1590s), it was rebuilt in 1610 and became the main palace for some 270 years.

Today it is simply amazing, like its cousin down the street, but with some distinctly different architectural and color schemes. It also has a backdoor that opens into the Biwan Secret Garden, described by your roamies earlier in this blog.

As of now we have officially met our mental limit of palaces. No more. I promise.
