Biwan Secret Garden is a 74 acre forested tract of tranquility, walled off from the bustle of Seoul. It adjoins the UNESCO World Heritage Site-designated Cheongbokgung palace, and can only be visited as part of a 90 minute walking tour ($4.50 for adults, $2 for kids).

Originally the exclusive domain of the last several Joseon dynasty kings and their court, it is a surprisingly wild place, more forest than sculpted garden, with islands of orderly outbuildings (“stations”, as our tour guide called them) amidst the sea of green.

The final “wow” moment: A 750 year old Chinese juniper, closes the tour.
